Save Water & Money - Water Storage Bladder

When relining a swimming pool, the usual practice has been to drain the water and refill it from the tap. This wastes a lot of water and money, as it can take thousands of liters every day. Instead of wasting the water, you can store it in a bladder to use again later. By saving water in your pool, you'll be surprised at how much of a difference it makes. There's no need to just throw the water away.

We provide cost-effective, environmentally friendly pool services by means of preserving and storing your water, whilst repairs or renovations are being carried out on your pool or pond. We’ll turn up when we say we will – so you’ll never be left waiting around & you’ll always be updated if plans change.

5 Easy Steps To Reline A Pool

Resurfacing a fibreglass pool can breathe new life into it, making it look brand new and extending its lifespan. This guide will walk you through the essential steps to achieve a smooth, durable, and attractive surface. Each step is crucial for the overall success of the project, so follow along carefully

Step

02

Draining & Surfacing the Pool

The first step in resurfacing a fibreglass pool is draining it completely. Once the water is removed, inspect the pool for any debris or foreign objects and clean them out. This step provides a clear workspace and allows you to assess the condition of the pool's surface thoroughly.

Step

03

Surface Preparation

Surface preparation is vital for ensuring the new gelcoat adheres properly. Begin by cleaning the pool surface with a pool surface cleaner to remove oils, dirt, and algae. After cleaning, allow the surface to dry completely. Next, sand the entire pool surface using a coarse-grit sandpaper. This creates a rough texture, allowing the new gelcoat to bond more effectively. Use a sanding machine for larger areas and hand sand smaller, intricate parts. Once sanding is complete, thoroughly rinse the pool to remove any dust and debris. Ensure the pool is dry before proceeding to the next step. This stage sets the foundation for a smooth and lasting resurfacing job.

Step

04

Installation Starts

Before applying the new gelcoat, it's crucial to address any cracks or chips in the fibreglass. Begin by identifying all the damaged areas and marking them for easy reference. Clean each crack and chip with a fibreglass cleaner to remove contaminants. Once cleaned, use a fibreglass repair kit, which includes resin and fibreglass cloth, to mend the damaged areas. Mix the resin according to the manufacturer’s instructions and apply it to the cracks and chips. Place the fibreglass cloth over the resin and smooth it out to remove air bubbles. Allow the repair to cure fully. Sand the repaired areas to ensure they are level with the rest of the pool surface. Properly repairing these defects ensures the longevity and integrity of the new surface.

Step

05

Applying the Gelcoat

Applying the gelcoat is the next critical step in resurfacing your fibreglass pool. Start by mixing the gelcoat according to the manufacturer’s instructions, ensuring you have a uniform consistency. Use a roller or spray gun to apply the gelcoat evenly across the entire pool surface. Work methodically, starting from one end and moving to the other to avoid missing any spots. Apply the gelcoat in thin, even layers to prevent runs and drips. Depending on the product, you may need to apply multiple coats. Allow each layer to cure partially before applying the next. Ensure you cover all areas, including steps and corners, to achieve a uniform finish. This step not only enhances the pool's appearance but also provides a protective layer that improves its durability.

Step

04

Curing and Finishing

The final step involves curing and finishing the newly resurfaced pool. Allow the gelcoat to cure completely according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. This curing process can take several days, during which you should keep the pool area free from dust and debris. Once fully cured, inspect the surface for any imperfections or missed spots and touch them up as needed. Finally, fill the pool with water and balance the chemicals to prepare it for use. Proper curing ensures the longevity and effectiveness of the new surface, providing a smooth, durable, and attractive finish that will last for years to come.

When To Decide Relinng : Common Signs & Problems

Let's get something clear: nothing lasts forever. Fibreglass pools are known for their durability and low maintenance. Over time, the surface of your pool may become worn or faded, tiles may have loosen, or surfaces may have crack and deteriorated. Overtime might experience the following;

Cracks

Cracks can be a serious issue, cracks can worsen you pool if water filters in or out of crack lines in the gel coating.Cracks are a reality of all types of materials, especially in fibreglass pools. Most of the times, these hairline cracks are hard to see and don't extend past the gel coating. But a poor quality pool might not endure severe wall cracks which may compromise your pool’s structural stability and cause leaks.

Bulging Floor

Sand backfilling and intense rain can lead to problems with the floor. If the sand fully compacts and buildups with water, it will exert tremendous pressure on the inside side of your walls fibreglass and eventually cause the walls to re-shape, cracks or leaks. This is a big issue as the pressure is compromising the structural stability of the pool

Leaks

Sand backfilling can also lead to problems with plumbing. If the sand fails to fully compact around the pipes, it will exert pressure on the connections with the fibreglass and eventually cause pool leaks.

Top Coat Deterioration

Usually, after 10-15 years, age and direct exposure of sun rays result in a colour distorted fibreglass pool. The top coat colour starts fading, leaving behind a white and sometimes flaky pool surface. In extreme cases where the top gel coat is of bad quality, colour distortion may result in gel coat deterioration with the top coat granulating and become chalky which is harmful to humans if inhaled or drank.

Black Spot Algae

Black Spot is particularly hard to get rid of when it takes up residence on the walls and floors or embedded in grout between tiles of your pool. Caused by poor chlorination or high phosphate levels. The algae can feed on the phosphates, stimulating its growth. However, Black Spot has been known to survive even when there are low phosphate levels in the pool water.

Gel coat deterioration

Gel coat deterioration happens when your pool shell incurs pressure that exceeds its ability to flex leading to small spider web-like cracks on the gel-coat and the original colour to fade into white. Even improper manufacturing, shipping and installation can leave behind cracks in your fibreglass pool.

Chalking

Chalking happens when the gel coat of your pool starts oxidizing. Age and excessive chlorination are a few common causing of chalking of a fibreglass pool. Inhaling or consuming top coat flakes is extremely unhealthy and may cause respiratory and stomach-related problems.

Liner Floating

Usually seen in concrete pools. When old or badly set up the pool liners can lose their seal and separate from the pool base, causing it to float. This is a relatively small problem, however, if left unattended other might arise and repairs might take longer.

Osmosis

Osmosis, popularly known as Fibreglass Cancer or blisters, is one of the worst issues with fibreglass pools. When contaminated water from the outside of the pool (soil area) filters to inside the fibreglass and penetrates into the top-coat, it shows as blisters or bumps on the pool’s surface.Once they reach their limit, these blisters will eventually crack, leaving behind small black/brown marks on the pool surface, bringing bacteria and nasty pollution to the water. Due to the high mineral content in these cracks, algae formation takes place which is called black plague. Once osmosis breaks out in your pool, the water conditions are less than recommended for your family, particularly to your little ones.

A gunnite swimming pool can be built to any size, shape and depth. There are some building requirements that will only allow for a gunnite swimming pool to be constructed due to its structural strength i.e. large hotel pools, public pools and some engineered designed domestic pools. Fibreglass swimming pools are quick, easy and neat to install. The water is approx 3-4 degrees warmer, the interior finish is smooth which prevents algae from adhering to the sides so is much easier to maintain. You use fewer chemicals in a fibreglass swimming pool which saves time and money. Cosmetically, fibreglass swimming pools look better for longer, they dont get the ugly black algae stains, hairline cracks and ceramic mosaics that keep falling off. Fibreglass swimming pools are also slightly cheaper.

A fibreglass swimming pool is manufactured in a factory using a mould. The fibreglass swimming pool is delivered to the site on a truck or trailer in one piece and put in the hole ready for the installation process to start. A gunnite swimming pool is made out of concrete and steel and is constructed on site, in the hole dug for the swimming pool to go into.

Depending on the size of the fibreglass swimming pool you chose it will take between 5-12 working days to carry out a basic installation which involves the excavation and removal of soil, the installation of the fibreglass shell, the pump and filter installation, the electrical connection, 1m surround paving and the cleaning of the pool and site.

It is extremely easy to maintain a fibreglass swimming pool these days. With salt water chlorinators and other products available these days the pool only needs to be worked on for 5-10 mins twice a month depending on leaves etc around the pool.

No, chemically if you have a salt water chlorinator, which most people do have these days; it will cost you approx R400 per year for salt and acid. Every two to three years you may need to spend approx R2000-R3000 replacing chlorinator cells, a broken pump or filter or an automatic pool cleaner that gets worn through wear and tear. A pool shop will charge you R250-R400 a month for a service that has them maintain your swimming pool twice a month. Regarding electricity costs to run your swimming pool pump it cost approx R200 R250 per month at the current rate depending on weather you have pool heating in which case the swimming pool pump runs for longer. A solar blanket will help bring the cost down so as to not have to have the swimming pool pump run for as long periods and the solar blanket stops the warmth dissipating into the cooler air above, plus there is less evaporation. Many people these days switch their pumps off in winter completely to save money as fewer chemicals are needed due to less evaporation hence less topping up of the water levels which keeps diluting the chemical balance.

Technically, yes. You could patch up an area but you will eventually need professional help as multiple patches could result in a leak.

It depends on what your requirements are.

The cost of regular pool cleaning services can vary from R800 and R2000 each month for general pool maintenance, this includes chemicals, treatments and accessories. If you don’t have time to clean and maintain your pool, you can hire a pool maintenance professional who will charge you a monthly fee for cleaning, maintenance and chemical treatments. Pool maintenance contracts range from R750 to R1050 according to your pool type and size.

It depends on what your requirements are. Fibreglass linings are normally cheaper and don’t need a liner. They are also easier to maintain. Although more expensive, Marbelite pools can be customized to shape, are much more durable and don’t need to be resurfaced as often.

It depends on what your requirements are..

It depends on what your requirements are.

Yes, but it would need to be at the same time your pool lining is being replaced or resurfaced because it will involve draining most the water out or all of the water.
